It's where groups of robots are used in collaboration to achieve shared goals.
I saw a demo at a conference recently where about 20 robots the size of small toy cars whizzed around like little insects. They could communicate with each other and even join themselves together.
Swarm robots could be used in hostile environments to collect samples or possibly link up to help each other across crevices or ditches.
