Though more widely known for her children’s books, including the popular Earthsea trilogy, Ursula le Guin has also written some of the most unsettling and thought-provoking science fiction. Her books examine what might happen if complete political freedom was put into practice, or if there was no such thing as men and women, only people. As le Guin turns 80 this month, a programme commissioned for BBC Radio 7 celebrates her work.
