In the September issue of Focus, I interview Tony DeRose, head of Pixar Animation Studios Research Group.
He told me about how scientists get involved with bringing characters like Woody and Buzz to life, and what he reckons is in store for the future of CGI. I saw Toy Story 3 last week and it was a really different experience knowing the maths and physics behind the finished product.
Tony also filled me in on an unusual hobby - building a huge animatronic fire-breathing dragon in his garage with his kids. Her name is Saphira. Here's the video, and don't forget to check out the Quick Chat with Tony in this month's issue.
