La Noire

Games
Manufacturer: Rockstar

Set in 1940s Los Angeles, LA Noire puts you in the shoes of police detective Cole Phelps. You start out as a beat cop, then rise through the ranks of the LAPD, solving crimes and collaring crooks in the shadow of the ‘Hollywoodland’ sign (authentic period detail abounds).
The game combines questioning witnesses and suspects, gathering evidence, and cruising around the gorgeously rendered city in the classy automobiles of the time. Thanks to some innovative facial animation technology, the characters’ faces are remarkably lifelike, and reading facial tics and eye movement is key to successful interrogation. This isn’t just a technical triumph though – LA Noire’s storytelling chops are similarly impressive, with the kind of measured pacing and convincing dialogue all too rare in games.
The glossy, high-quality style may be a hallmark of Rockstar, but fans
of the company’s previous open-world masterpieces Red Dead Redemption and the Grand Theft Auto series may be surprised by how linear this game feels. Exploration and free-roaming adventure is mostly sacrificed in favour of taut, cinematic storytelling. But when the story is
this involving, it’s a sacrifice you
can live with
