This shoot-’em-up, set in the underworld of Shanghai, sees ex-mercenary Kane and charismatic psychopath Lynch take on an army of gang members and cops when an arms deal goes badly wrong. The pair’s first outing had Kane as the protagonist, but the erratic behaviour of the mentally disturbed Lynch meant he stole the show. Here, he takes centre stage and the franchise is all the better for it.
What sets this apart from the hordes of other shooters is the graphical style. It has an ultra-realistic look reminiscent of a homemade YouTube video. You watch the action from an over-the-shoulder view, as if you’re a documentary film-maker following the duo’s violent lifestyle. Blood spatters the screen and bright lights cause lens flare; it sucks you in, making the gunfights extremely intense. The detail poured into Shanghai heightens the effect, with litter-strewn streets bustling with pedestrians and traffic.
Another improvement is an overhauled cover system that allows you to take shelter at the touch of a button, rather than doing so automatically. The whole thing should be played with a friend, either online or with a split screen. If you like your shooting games
