You know what you’re getting with this schlocky, zombie hack-’em-up – an island and lots of death. This game pitches you into the middle of a tropical island overrun with the undead. You must survive by improvising weapons from bits and bobs you find and running errands
for fellow stranded islanders –
risking life and limb to gather petrol, for instance.
The setting is expansive and gives you lots freedom to explore on foot or in vehicles. The first-person fighting is mostly mêlée-based and takes some getting used to but helps Dead Island stand out from the crowd of gun-happy zombie shooters. Just be warned: this is for gamers over 17 as the gore is graphic, with bloody limb severings and beheadings aplenty.
To get the most out of Dead Island, you’ll need three buddies. It’s built for four-person online cooperative play – all the better for successful questing and experiencing the pleasingly movie-like survival scenarios that naturally arise as you roam the resort. The characters are two-dimensional and the (non-zombie) voice acting is shaky, but neither is impossible to overlook in the midst of the zombie-bashing fun.
