How does 48-hour deodorant work?

Several deodorants boast 48-hour protection but to get these products to work is a rather sticky solution.

The bacteria that feed on your sweat and cause the odour are killed using alcohol and their recolonisation is inhibited using acidic or salty compounds. At the same time, aluminium salts cause your sweat glands to absorb water and swell shut, preventing further sweating. The 48-hour formulations are mainly different in the way they use various gums and waxes to resist being rubbed or washed off your skin.
