It depends what kind of email you use. Most webmail services hold your emails indefinitely unless your account is inactive for a given amount of time as per the provider’s terms and conditions. If you use an email client (like Outlook), your messages pass through a server. Some delete emails after you’ve downloaded them, but once on your computer, they’re there as long as you want them.
