Can ordinary batteries be charged in a battery charger?

Ordinary batteries aren’t supposed to be recharged. The charge could heat them till they catch fire or rupture, allowing the chemicals inside to leak out. There are some devices that ‘charge’ alkaline and other regular batteries, but they actually recondition the chemicals inside, squeezing the last bit of energy out of them.
