Researchers at Imperial College London suggest that fast food outlets should hand out free 'statin' drugs to counteract the effect of munching on a burger. The heart experts have calculated that taking a pill would offset the increased heart attack risk from eating a cheeseburger and a milkshake.
Statins reduce the amount of unhealthy 'LDL' cholesterol in the blood. In the UK, one statin, simvastatin, is already available over the counter at pharmacies in low 10mg doses without a prescription.
The researchers came up with their suggestion after looking at how a person's heart attack risk increases with their daily fat intake and comparing it with the decrease in risk provided by various statins.
