i caught the end of a prog' on bbc4 last night "the secret life of waves" in it the narrator was saying that a wave is refered to as a function with its energy always in a state of change as opposed to an object, ie a boat on the wave, resisting change. He then asked the viewer to consider a man on the boat, which is he most like, the wave or the boat, makes you think.
heres a link, tha part im on about is about 49 minutes in http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... _of_Waves/

Very thought provoking indeed, and I recall that I found it a bit of a revelation when electrons where described to me as being less of a fundamental particle but more as an energy wave form and orbiting an atomic nucleus as a sort of cloud rather than the way it is often shown in the form of a linear motion. ;)
