i caught the end of a prog' on bbc4 last night "the secret life of waves" in it the narrator was saying that a wave is refered to as a function with its energy always in a state of change as opposed to an object, ie a boat on the wave, resisting change. He then asked the viewer to consider a man on the boat, which is he most like, the wave or the boat, makes you think.
