There is an alternative theory, if you don't want to strangle it you can stick a finger up its bum, which is supposed to make it let go. But I'm guessing that might make it even more angry...

... or it might buy you a drink.

I keep dogs. Just staying calm, and walking (as you normally would) away from dogs can keep you safe. If you get frightened the dog will sense it and "feed off" your fear. Humans are like this too -- I have seen chavs behave this way.

You could carry a telegraphic baton or a hide-away knife also.

Don't think you could get away with carrying those... in a country where chewing gum is illegal...

I have 2 unruly dogs living in my street, that chase anybody walking by their house. When they come running after me, I turn around chase after them. It really unnerves them, and they bolt for the safety of their yard. I doubt this would be a good strategy against a Doberman or Rottweiler though. If I were confronted by one of those, assuming I couldn't climb on a car, I would go for its collar and lift it off the ground. If that weren't possible and it already has a grip, use the thumbs to gouge its eyes. That's more pain than any living thing can stand. It would need to be applied carefully though, as it could permanently blind the dog.

Somehow I think that would be the last concern on my mind or many folks, in fact, I'd probably be aiming to put the pooch down first and foremost. Not nice but in minimising damage to saving your life itself from an animal that will kill you if let you don't hold back.
Hope is but the first step upon the road to disappointment.

I read recently that wrestling with the dog is a possible defence tactic. Seems they are pretty rubbish at it. Basically you need to try and get into a position where you can lay on top of it with all your weight until help arrives!
