Hello and can anyone help?

Hello and can anyone help?

Postby GarethJ » Oct 3rd, '09, 11:56

Hi, my brother is studying for a degree in Disaster Management and has requested a globe depicting the tectonic plates for Christmas. I've trawled the net and can't find one. Does anyone know if such a beast exists and if so point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Hello GarethJ, and welcome :)

I've just done what you've probably been doing for a while and searched the internet for such a globe. I can't find anything at all. My only suggestion is you find or print off a large copy of a tectonic plate map and make one if possible?

hi gareth welcome to the forum

I found this http://www.platetectonics.com/globe/index.asp

The Tectonic Globe™

The Tectonic Globe™ is a globe unlike any other currently on the market. Its unique hand-crafted design illustrates clearly and accurately Earth's crustal tectonic features in vivid relief. The Tectonic Globe™ captures the essence of Earth's dynamic character by depicting tectonic plate boundaries at mid-ocean ridges, subduction zones, and continental collision zones. Other distinguishing characteristics of The Tectonic Globe™ include raised and indented continental shelves, terrestrial and sea-floor topography, major transform faults, island chains, island arcs, and the relative thickness of continental and oceanic crust - all engineered in hand-sculpted relief.

Aside from its unique aesthetic qualities, the tactility of our Tectonic Globe makes it ideal for developing an understanding of Earth's tectonic nature by making it fun to explore the surface of the planet in a hands-on, minds-on way. Along with markings to identify oceans, continents, and mountain ranges, The Tectonic Globe™ is constructed with markings to identify all tectonic features including the names of individual plates.

At Tectonic Designs we envision two embodiments for this fascinating globe. Our first embodiment is a 12" globe, priced and targeted for the mainstream market is a hands-on globe for the consumer looking for that different sort of something - the next generation product. As globes go ours is just that, and we are confident that The Tectonic Globe™ will fare quite well in the midst of other globes on display in stores such as The Nature Company, What a World, World of Science, World of Knowledge, and numerous educational catalogs worldwide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's that fascinating and that unique!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our second Tectonic Globe™ embodiment is designed and priced for those searching for an uncommon, high-quality, breakthrough product. Measuring 16 inches in diameter, this breathtaking globe is internally illuminated bringing to life the tectonic surface features of the earth in amazing 3D relief. The Tectonic Globe™ rests and can be constructed to rotate slowly on a handsome pedestal fitted with a custom-designed plaque bearing the name of the globe and a brief commentary describing the essence of our tectonic planet.

I would call that a result Nemesis. ;)

And welcome GarethJ presumably you do not have any financial connection with said globe production. :D

Thanks everyone. I've emailed plate tectonics for further info but I have a suspicion it may be out of my price range!
