This is, at the end of the day, not much in the way of SF. It's a sporting hero, feelgood movie.
It does, however, take a look at the whole business of anthropomorphising the inanimate, which is an issue of some interest today, in robotics research. Given one of the main threads of the plot, I do wonder if the original writing included exploring mimicry, mirror neurones and the whole issue of empathy, but that it got cut for being too time consumptive / costly / cerebral. Potentially a lot more story there than was used.

Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.
