Podcast out now (with your questions answered!)

Postby focus_ed » Nov 28th, '11, 23:19

A while back I asked for your questions for Prof Lisa Randall. Well, I did put 3 questions from forum members to her when she popped into our studio.

I asked her these at the end of the interview, so find out if one of yours was answered by listening to our latest podcast:

The item about the 'radioactive gas cloud creaping across Europe' was unexpected Imust say. :o

Anyway, it's well worth listening too. ;)
Allow a good 50 minutes for the full programme.

Oh and Powerman, Mr.S and Kingphillip all get their questions answered .

I want to thank the editor of Focus for selecting my question. I also want to thank Professor Lisa Randall for supplying the answer.

Energy momentum tensor. Way, way over my head. But a search of the internet provided some relief and understanding.

Rest of the podcast was informative as well, particularly the 3d printing.

There must have been an inside joke on the moniker KingPhillip, as they chuckled at the mere mention of it. :?: Would KingStephen or KingBillieJean have trigger a similar response?

I think the apparent amusement may perhaps due to the fact that Queen Elizabeth's husband is called Phillip, therefore KingPhillip has a slightly 'regal' air to it? ;)

Having said that most 'usernames' are unusual to say the least, and well sometimes people can display nervous uncertainty by appearing to laugh a little. ? :?

Yes, it was the just unusual-ness of the usernames that made us chuckle! There was a bit we cut out when Prof Randall and me were just laughing at the names! I must stress that they're perfectly good names - it just sounds odd when you're reading them out to one of the world's greatest physicists! Luckily she has a great sense of humour.

I'm left feeling a tad jealous and worried that mine was just plain boring... ;)

They were great questions - as you can hear from Lisa's answers. The one about time running differently in different dimensions - wow, I'd never even thought of that. I thought the answer would just be no - but there was more to it, as she explained. Fascinating stuff, these extra dimensions.

Of course if time did run at different speeds in other dimensions, hypothetically speaking obviously, but if it did then in theory you could cross over into a time stream that was running faster than ours and as it overtook our own travel into the future by crossing back over or alternatively cross over into a time stream that was running slower than ours and as our time stream overtook it .......... ah, but would you actually be able to travel into 'our' past? :?
That doesn't quite seem to work for some reason??

You'd never be able to "cross over" into a different dimension. The only way we can know that other dimensions exist is if the forces have some sort of influence across multiple dimensions. They're looking for evidence like that at the LHC.

Yes, but hypothetically speaking .... As a 'mind' experiment only..... No?

No idea, sorry Liam, he posted once and went away, but we all know it was your post about time running at different speeds in different directions that really piqued their interest, and that's what counts.
Bask in the glory I say. ;)

Oh and yes, I'm jealous.
