No, not a searchlight.
Imagine a high cloud base (mares tails type cloud - high as aircraft will fly) An hour or two before seeing this I was in the back garden enjoying the evening from a recliner chair watching a passenger jet fly over and a contrail formed after its wake, which was then dragged across the sky by the higher prevailing winds, at similar height to the clouds there.
It was a defineabe object rather than a light reflection on lower cloud.
I've brought my camera downstairs in case it happens again.

Just to drag the subject back onto topic for a mo' :D the Perseids will make an encore appearance around the middle of this month (September) and the moon will be favourable for once, but you will need really clear, dark skies to make the most of it, and my money is on cloud and rain, for the UK at least. ;)
