What do you think of the latest Focus?

March 2010

I've only seen the digital preview so far (boy I hope my international subscription works and the full magazine is in my 'mailbox' soon) but I am very much looking forward to this issue - particularly the feature on the Olympics, whose athletes are amazing me.

I'm also stoked to see the Oasis of the Seas in the megapixel feature (I had the dubious pleasure of working on it while it was under construction), especially as it settles my lingering question of how it was going to get under that bridge! I had heard from locals that the bridge was contested in Finland since they worried it would ruin the giant shipbuilding industry - I'm glad to see even a ship the size of the Oasis could make it under, even though it only had 60cm to spare!

I would love to share with you some photos I have from my time there, but, uh, I'm afraid of being sued by Royal Caribbean (my graduate pay could certainly not cover that...)

I was amazed to read that. There must have been a mass holding of breath when it started to go under ...

There were some interesting things in this month's issue. Robert Matthew's "cults" article struck a chord, as did the NASA/Ares reportage.

As i remember i saw a programme on the discovery channel last year about it and they showed it sailing under that very bridge, as i remember the clearence was 6" now that is either a fantastic bit of judgement or sheer plain good luck or maybe just maybe that sharp intake of bated breath as it went under did the trick and dragged it down an inch or two  :) ;)
