The photograph of the Asian weaver ant carrying a 500mg weight
Ants change the size of their feet to help them lift

An amazing image of an ant lifting 100 times its body weight has won first prize in a science photography contest.

The image shows an Asian weaver ant hanging upside down on a glass-like surface and holding a 500mg ...

King Tut - his life and death unmasked at last

Seems he didn't die from a blow to the head after all, (this was a post mortem wound made by the workers mummifying the body). Some pics at the end of the article.

King Tutankhamun was a hobbled, weak teenager with a cleft palate and club foot. And he probably has his parents to blame.

For the mother and father of the legendary boy pharaoh were actually brother and sister.

The startling discovery was revealed ...

Good current Sci Fi books?

Hello all.
I used to only read Sci-Fi, until I was about 22! After that, I slowly read less & less Sci-Fi, now only occasionally buying the latest Iain M Banks. I am currently reading 'The Quiet War' by Paul McAuley (bought on a whim with a voucher), and its actually pretty good. Some nice tech, climate change back story, even some good character development (so rare in Sci-Fi).

Anyway, my question is, can anyone ...

Science as a Contact Sport

I hope this isn't too lengthy - I could have said a lot more! But here is a 'concise' review of:

Image

In the great climate change debate, war can be waged on two main fronts: from the viewpoint purely of the science, or taking into consideration the influence of politics and psychology, fuelled by the media. In Science as a Contact Sport, IPCC heavyweight Stephen Schneider focuses primarily on the latter battle. There are ...

laptop is trying to kill me....

I noticed that I kept getting little tingling sensations in my hands near to my earphone, mic, bluetooth etc. ports at the front of my laptop...

Thought I was catching little hairs in it or sommat... turns out I've been getting electric shocks... I wonder if it wants me to learn something and is trying to condition me based on my inputs... clever buggers.

I've seen the topic come up in other locations before and ...

8,112 TB Memory stick by 2015 ?

I was looking at a new usb data stick that has an amazing 256GB of memory and i thought WOW. The reason for this is a average movie file such as AVI or VLC is about 700MB. This means i could fit 365 movie files on a single usb memory stick "which to me is a damn lot" but then i started thinking about "MOORE'S LAW" Which stated that every two year's a chips capacity ...

Travelling Wave Nuclear Reactor

So recently Billy Gates — he of M'Soft fame — declared one of his fondest wishes and his substantial financial backing as being a revolutionary new nuclear power tech, this Traveling Wave Reactor. Not a new idea apparently but one with little or no active production research. Anyhoo it is a new variety of nuclear generator that utilises a lesser refined uranium fuel product and actually uses the waste it produces as a long lasting ...

First images collection from WISE

There be some nice ones from this new all sky mission.

WASHINGTON -- A diverse cast of cosmic characters is showcased in the first survey images NASA released Wednesday from its Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE.

Since WISE began its scan of the entire sky in infrared light on Jan. 14, the space telescope has beamed back more than a quarter of a million raw, infrared images. Four new, processed pictures illustrate a sampling ...

Cosmic rays

New images from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope show where supernova remnants emit radiation a billion times more energetic than visible light. The images bring astronomers a step closer to understanding the source of some of the universe's most energetic particles -- cosmic rays.

Accents

Why is it that an Australian and New Zealander easily pick up a British and American accent, yet a Brit and an American never pick up any accent? Madonna still speaks with her accent even though she has lived in London for so many years now, and Michael Caine has always had an English accent throughout all his years in Hollywood. Even the Beckhams dont have any hint of an LA accent. Any explanations?
