Total Recall 2012

For anyone not aware of it, way back in 1966 Phillip K Dick produced a twenty page short story 'We Can Recall it for you Wholesale' which was used as the basis for the original Total Recall in 1990. In that version the action takes place on Mars, much as it did in the original work. However this latest version is set in a dystopian future with international terrorism as the driving theme which I'm ...

It's not Transformers

You may or may not be aware that there is a cheap company out there that makes alternates of well-known and successful movies; I’m sure the bozos imagine that they create homages and not captalising clones. SyFy loves the damn things for some bizarre reason and so are always running em. I watched one, well I kinda watched one and I just noticed that some Battleship knock off called American Battleship is on the schedule ...

Mortal Chaos

Although it is only a fiction book, this is a book that follows the effects of the butterfly effect till a plane crash near Heathrow Airport. Any of you read this? There is also a second book called Deep Oblivion.

The Better Angels of our Nature.

Steven Pinker's latest, as reviewed in Focus a while back, and c+p-d from my Play.com review to save time...

Image

The notion that we are gradually becoming nicer to one another seems counterintuitive, with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, rioting in the streets of many cities last summer and the Stephen Lawrence affair occupying headlines.

The book is very long, and in fairness needs to be in order to present the masses of evidence that ...

See inside Science

OK, here's another one for the kids. You guys have kids don't you?

Image

The great thing about this book is that they have managed to cover pretty much everything in nice little bitesize chunks. With the addition of the flip up tabs for the kids to lift up (like spot the dog), it really gets the kids interested. My 2 year old is forever ...

Dr Seuss There's no place like space!

I presume this book review area is not strictly for Adult reading? So here goes:

Image

My 2 year old loves this book. She hasn't got a friggin' clue what it's about, but it's got loads of really cool pictures and it teaches you, the adult, things about the solar system and the universe and it translates to the child as a poem that keeps them intrigued. It has bright vibrant pictures and it's just ...

Moondust.

Image

I'm just finishing re-reading this, and I find it fascinating. Prompted by the death of one of the remaining moonwalkers, the author set out to see how they those remaining were changed by their experiences, and tries to place the Apollo programme culturally. Part history, part interview, part philosophy but all very interesting.

The Good Book: A Secular Bible

I know you don't do religion on here, but I thought this was a pretty interesting concept. :)

Drawing on the wisdom of 2,500 years of contemplative non-religious writing on all that it means to be human - from the origins of the universe to small matters of courtesy and kindness in everyday life... "The Good Book" offers a thoughtful, non-religious alternative to the many people who ...

Focus as a source of new books.

So, do you find the book review pages good for sourcing new reading material?

It's by far and away my biggest source, and am reading Everything is Obvious by Duncan Watts at present. It makes some very interesting points, but seems to get just a little lost in between them, full judgement reserved until I've finished, naturally:

Image

I bought a kindle a few months' ago (and on which I'm reading this), and have definitely ...
