Alien Biology - The Voynich Manuscript

Has anybody heard of this so-called Voynich manuscript. It has been dated to the early 1400's has been dismissed as a hoax, primarily because of the cost and effort it would take to produce it. It has drawings of unknown plants, presented in a textbook format. Heres a brief extract of the article.

Named after the Polish-American antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich, who acquired it in 1912, the Voynich Manuscript is a detailed 240-page book ...

How many germs are there?

What prompted this question is a label on hand sanitiser saying it kills 99.999% of germs, so I'm trying to work out how many germs there are out there and how many it can't kill! :)

Large brained mice created in the lab

If we manipulated this gene in chimpanzees, would we end up with a "near-human", sentient being?

Mice with a single missing gene have brains that are 35 percent larger than normal, a new study found. Though they have big brains the mice are as healthy and happy as normal mice.

The researchers created these mutant mice to learn more about Snf2l, which is known to play a role in folding up and organizing the cell's ...

Planet Formation

According to this article, Vesta was unable to form as a planet, because Jupiter exerted too strong a pull on the surrounding asteroids. So if for whatever reason we wanted to create a new planet (say we wanted to prepare for the day when the sun expands and engulfs the earth), we just need to divert asteroids on a collision course with Vesta. At some point it will achieve critical mass, and have a strong ...

End of Times

Bad news everyone. May 27 is officially the end of the world.

The year 2008 marked the last of God’s warnings to mankind and the beginning in a countdown of the final three and one-half years of man’s self-rule that will end by May 27, 2012.

If anybody hears any trumpet sounds between now and then, don't post it here, I'd rather remain blissfully unaware ...

Light-sensitive electrical components

With the aid of a breadboard, wires and crocodile clips, I have set up a basic circuit consisting of a 9-volt battery, a rheostat and a motor. The circuit works, but when I add a supposedly light-sensitive diode to it, the motor runs whether the diode is covered up or not. This is the case both with a conventional photodiode and one which is specifically supposed to work only in visible light.

I thought this ...

Why is BO so repulsive?

I assume at some point in our evolutionary past it was somewhat attractive. So when and why did it become the direct opposite?
