Link Between Earthquakes and Tropical Cyclones

Ha, ha, they said 'groundbreaking' in an article about earthquakes

Yep, I believe that's my coat over there...

A groundbreaking study led by University of Miami (UM) scientist Shimon Wdowinski shows that earthquakes, including the recent 2010 temblors in Haiti and Taiwan, may be triggered by tropical cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons), according to a presentation of the findings at the 2011 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco.

"Very wet rain events are the trigger," said Wdowinski, associate research professor of marine geology and geophysics at the UM Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. "The heavy rain induces thousands of landslides and severe erosion, which removes ground material from the Earth's surface, releasing the stress load and encouraging movement along faults."

Apparently, although I must admit that I did not give it much credit at first, it is thought that solar activity might also play a part in all of this. :?

Well, solar activity effects weather, and it seems weather can effect seismic activity, so why not? ;)

I also read somewhere recently that El Niño and La Niña weather patterns may effect activity in the "Ring of Fire", apparently at least in part, by the sheer weight of water being ramped up at one side or the other of the Pacific.
Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.

Sounds reasonable, I'm sure I read somewhere that the deep oceans do have a hydraulic effect on the sea bed.

I think we need Flakkarin in on this one. ;)

I have no science to back it up ( so I will obviously talk with authority  ) but I would agree with the possibility of solar activity being linked, simple logic and some knowledge of how little I know about most things tells me that we don't have enough modern data or reliable recorded evidence as to what how much the sun can affect our climate on a daily, weekly or even over the course of centuries.

If I recall correctly I think we also have to consider the possibility of the Earths magnetic field being a factor as it is directly affected by solar activity but is also linked directly to the core which in turn must surely influence the greater interior of the the planet? :?

I do find myself thinking that we lack a certain holistic data base on this subject. ;)
