Whats the difference between an HD tv and an HD-Ready tv? (This is not a joke!)

I thought that HD ready meant that the TV only has an SD tuner but can display HD from an external source via HDMI

Sounds about right...

I see you get "HD ready 1080p" now too so I think Doon's right.

Very confusing.

Go for 1080p, there is no confusion then.

Be aware though, that some full HD TVs display a really poor picture on SD and HD (1080i) but look awesome with blu-ray.

We just bought a new LG which fell into this catagory, it has been quickly swapped for a Samsung.
I'm led to believe that this is a software related issue as the TV uses processing power to smooth out the image.

Huh, that's nothing. One of the guys I work with has a wife that works at John lewis. He ended up with a 50" Panasonic 3D TV for £400. I gave him the bird when he told me!
