"Extinct" Galapagos Tortoise Found

Postby MikeG » Jan 9th, '12, 21:02

Lonesome George may not be lonesome for long. Apparently, hybrid offspring of the Chelonoidis becki species, as young as 15 years old found on a nearby island (Isabella) were discovered to share the same genes as the species Chelonoidis elephantopus once considered extinct.

After 150 years of being "extinct," a species of giant tortoise may be on the verge of a comeback tour, scientists report today (Jan. 9).

If George can no longer "perform", at least this gives the option of artificial insemination, or barring that, cross breeding the hybrids to extract the "pure" strain. :|
