..Shame you didn't involve Facebook in this - especially as I was one of the many book-givers around the country.
As for top science books, I would agree with The Blind Watchmaker - even though is literally scares the hoo-ha out of me. However, I would also add James Glieck's Chaos to that list.
Furthermore, I would add David Attenborough's Life on Earth. Surely this man, more than anyone else, has done more to bring environmental science and evoluition to the masses?
