Why does scratching help itches?

Scratching an itch is just a distraction tactic for your nervous system.

Itching usually results from weak or variable stimulation to the skin, such as an insect crawling up your arm. When you scratch the itchy spot, this acts to prevent the spinal cord from sending signals from that spot to the brain. So you don’t feel the itch any more.
